Summary
Research on Mary Wollstonecraft as a philosophical thinker has mostly focused on her political thought, examining her concepts of liberty, rights, duty and property. This project takes a different point of departure and focuses on Wollstonecraft’s understanding of the mental faculties of reason, passion and imagination, and of their moral significance. The aim is to show that Wollstonecraft developed an ingenious moral philosophy, intrinsically combining reason and passion, and that she deserves recognition as one of the important moral philosophers of the late Eighteenth Century. Focusing particularly on her moral thought also broadens the picture of early feminist thought, which has been primarily understood in political terms.
