Susanna was awarded her PhD through University of Jyväskylä, Faculty of Sport and Health Sciences, Department of Sport Sciences in 2009. She investigated the effects of physical activity intervention on the development of fundamental motor skills in preschool children. Susanna’s research interests are in physical education in early education. She is interested in the evaluation, promotion and follow-up of motor skill development and physical activity behaviour in children. A key interest is the role fundamental motor skill competence has to physical activity behaviour. Within this broad area she is also interested in the role of free play in children's skill acquisition.
