I study political relations between governments and citizens in contemporary postcolonial Africa. This topic is important for at least two reasons. First, fragile political institutions and weak national identities are among the main factors correlating with structural poverty and international migration. Second, several former colonial states in Africa are currently searching for alternative modes and mechanisms for democratic government that are not heavily dependent on the high levels of education and consumption prevalent in the West. There is good reason to believe that the lessons from these experiments will be useful for Northern countries like Finland which are currently undergoing structural transformation of their economies.
