General description
Hannele Harjunen is an Associate Professor in Sociology of Sport at the Department of Social Sciences of Sport in the University of Jyväskylä, Finland. Until 2022 she worked as a Senior Lecturer in gender studies at the department of Social Sciences and Philosophy in the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences. Harjunen has a PhD in gender studies and holds the title of docent in gender studies from Tampere University. Her doctoral dissertation exained Finnish women's experiences of fatnes. In her post doc research she explored the complex relationships between neoliberal economic rationale, body, gender, and fatness (2011-2015). Harjunen was a Kone Foundation Senior Research Fellow in 2018-2021. Her current research interests concern gender, fatness, exercise, sport as an exclusive field, and sociology of sport.

Research interests
Harjunen on tuonut yhteiskuntatieteellistä lihavuustutkimusta Suomeen ja tutkinut ja kirjoittanut aiheesta laajasti sekä osallistunut aktiivisesti julkiseen keskusteluun lihavuudesta 2000-luvun alusta saakka Suomessa ja kansainvälisesti. Harjusen tutkimus laajentaa ymmärrystä lihavuudesta ja kehon normeista sosiaalisena, poliittisena ja taloudellisena kysymyksenä sekä sukupuolitettuna kokemuksena. Tutkimuksen hyödyt ovat niin akateemiset, yhteiskunnalliset kuin yksilölliset:
