The significance of my PhD project is to take the next step from correlative ecological and physiological studies to the experimental approach. My aim is to focus the small mammals which are the key species in forest ecosystems, and consequently this animal group is an important indicator of function of the whole ecosystem. I will conduct multi-generational large-scale experiments to test for the possible micro-evolutionary changes in wild populations exposed to long-term low level ionizing radiation in nature. The aims of the PhD project are to quantify: •the phenotypic responses to radiation at individual and population levels •radiation in the environment and how radioactive particles accumulate in bank voles •the fitness effects on females and males in high and low background radiation areas with experimental tests
