Professor of Political Science


I defended my doctoral dissertation at the University of Tampere in January 2004 and subsequently held teaching and research positions at the Danish Institute for International Studies, Petrozavodsk State University and the University of Helsinki.

During 2010-2015 I held the Academy of Finland Research Fellowship with the project ‘Biopolitics of Stalinism’. During 2015-2019 I was the Principal Investigator of the Academy of Finland project 'Biopolitics and Democracy in Global Governance' (BIODEM). In February 2018 I was appointed Professor of Political Science at the University of Jyväskylä.

I am the author of over 80 publications, including nine single-authored monographs with international publishers, five of them presently available in paperback. I have also published 35 articles in peer-reviewed international journals, including Political Theory, Security Dialogue, Society and Space, Political Studies, Political Geography. My latest book is Biopolitics after Truth: Knowledge Power and Democratic Life, published by Edinburgh University Press in 2021.

My research interests include contemporary political theory, continental philosophy, biopolitics, democracy and totalitarianism, crisis studies and post-truth politics.

Research interests

Sergei Prozorov is Professor of Political Science at the University of Jyväskylä. He is the author of ten books including Biopolitics after Truth (2021), Democratic Biopolitics (2019) and The Biopolitics of Stalinism (2016). He has also published over 30 articles in major international journals. His research interests include continental political philosophy, political theory, theories of democracy and totalitarianism, biopolitics and governance.
