Summary

OneChild research project focuses on the topical issue of declining fertility rates in Finland and other high-income countries, by studying the factors that predict subsequent childbearing among first-time parents living in one-child families. Cross-national longitudinal survey data collected as part of the CopaGloba consortium is utilized to compare, how first-time parents’ co-parenting expectations during pregnancy and experiences when their firstborn is 1.5 years old predict the subsequent childbearing intentions among Finnish, Japanese, and Portuguese parents. In addition, longitudinal survey data collected as part of the CHILDCARE consortium is used in investigating how parents’ socioeconomic background, parenting experiences, work characteristics, and work–family reconciliation predict the subsequent childbearing behavior among Finnish first-time parents. The project produces new knowledge about parenting- and work-related factors that predict the birth of a second child both in the Finnish and international contexts.
