Summary
Society is becoming ever more environmentally aware as sustainable products and solutions start to encroach on both public and private perceptions. There is huge interest in renewable raw materials. And, as in many other industrial sectors, this is setting the agenda for the paints and surface coatings. Many paints and surface coatings already including the labels “environ-mentally friendly” and “eco-friendly” are already available on the market and it is true to say that they include bio-based or renewable raw materials, however the actual biobased/sustainable material content is very low. The
development of “green” products that are waterborne, UV curable and contain biobased/sustainable resins, dyes and additives are in demand. Green chemical technology is set to take on a greater role in the future. However currently the needed innovations are very few and only in the development phase.
The project overcomes the market challenges by providing a total biobased PU solution synthesized by the reactive
polymerization of a biobased polyol with isocyanate.
