Summary

Abstract:

The CICAT2025 Consortium accelerates Finland’s strategic aim to become the leading circular economy (CE) country globally by 2025. In agendas and roadmaps by businesses and policymakers CE is manifested as a pathway toward sustainable economic growth. However, there is friction between intentions and realized actions. CICAT2025 aims to realize intentions and manifestations and facilitate the transformation from CE innovation ecosystem to CE business ecosystems by investigating the key drivers that accelerate and key barriers that inhibit Finland’s and diverse stakeholders’ sustainable growth and transition to CE. The drivers are regarded as CE catalysts cutting across our society and refer to social, governmental and technical agents crucial to boosting and reaching sustainable
growth. In interaction with stakeholders CICAT2025 exposes and examines technological, business/economic, regulative and cultural CE catalysts and their intertwined dynamics within society. Theoretical contributions and scientific impacts are pursued by conducting qualitative interdisciplinary (business, technology, arts, law and politics) case analyses of different CE business ecosystems, studying CE as an umbrella concept and developing comprehensive knowledge on diverse CE catalysts. In addition, CICAT2025 generates societal impact by developing research-based guidance on how to apply the CE catalysts as instruments in a crosscutting toolbox for CE transition. The CICAT2025 Consortium comprises multidisciplinary CE-specialized contributions from technology (TUT), business (UTU, UTA, JYU, UEF, TUT), politics (UTA), art (TAMK), linguistics (UTU), law (UEF) and stakeholder interaction (TUAS). To reach its objectives in accelerating CE business ecosystems, CICAT2025 implements six interlinked and partly parallel work packages (Coordination; CE ecosystems and agency; Catalysts and dynamics; Change and sustainability; Instruments and research based guidance and Stakeholder interaction and engagement) realized via cross-disciplinary collaboration with national and international partners and in interaction with the ecosystem stakeholders. According to the CICAT2025 proposal, by 2025, the Finnish society can make a major shift and implement CE principles to foster sustainable growth and will be able to manage proactively and reactively divergent catalysts in CE business ecosystems.
