Tiivistelmä

Wildfires are one of the major global environmental threats posed by climate change. Objective of the FireMan consortium is to develop novel, disruptive AI-based technology for the fast paced detection of wildfires and for creating situational awareness during the wildfire event using autonomous unmanned aerial systems (UAS, drone). The research will focus on six major areas: (1) autonomously operating and navigating drones and their swarms; (2) 5G/6G connectivity; (3) autonomous air traffic management (ATM) and U- Space; (4) advanced remote sensing sensors and AI to extract information in real-time (fire spots, fire front, flame height, temperature, speed etc.); (5) a prediction engine that will predict the fire spread using GIS data, environmental conditions data (e.g. wind direction) and the real-time situational information (from step 4); (6) an integrated drone-based approach for creating situational awareness during the disaster event. The methods will be developed for two use cases: the early detection of wildfires triggered by the information obtained from risk services and the real-time situational awareness during the fire event. Besides the wildfire case study, the technologies are relevant for various other applications that require up-to-date reliable environmental situational awareness, for example, floods, oil leaks, storm damages, and earthquakes, and will be relevant for many other applications as well, such as precision agriculture and forestry. The consortium will collaborate actively with the competence centres UNITE Flagship, 6GFlagship and the FUAVE RDI-network, international scientific community, as well as with the major Finnish stakeholders in the wildfire management. The multidisciplinary research consortium will create scientific breakthroughs and societal impacts by investigating and developing digital and low-emission technology that will greatly support the objectives of adapting and mitigating climate change.
