Summary

Given links between physical activity in children and adults to better health and reduced disease risk, this project aims to test the efficacy of a behavioural intervention to increase physical activity participation in low-active children and their parents. The intervention will target change in modifiable determinants of physical activity using an online training programme. The intervention will adopt a randomised waitlist-controlled design with parents and their children allocated to an intervention or waitlist control group. The primary outcome will be change in individual and joint physical activity engagement measured at 1, 3, 6, and 12 months postintervention. The intervention will also test the mechanisms by which the intervention leads to physical activity change. This project will yield intervention materials that will enhance existing physical activity campaigns and contribute to the national priority of enhancing the health of the Finnish population.
