Summary

Evolution typically forms only a small part of the science curriculum in Finland and focuses specifically on human evolution rather than general principles. Our workshops allow students to engage with real scientists carrying out evolutionary research Finland. They will be based around practical activities and will promote critical thinking skills and inquiry-based learning. Based on feedback received from the teacher education department and school visits during the previous funding period, primary school teachers often feel unsecure in their ability to teach evolution, and therefore the emphasis in teaching tends to be on other topics in biology. Therefore, we will also organize short courses for teachers to use these workshops in their own teaching. We create high-quality content that helps teachers gain confidence presenting scientific ideas, while also linking with the new Finnish Science curriculum.
