Summary

This project examines the interweaving of media and society in the context of forced removals and returns of foreign nationals from Finland – in short – deportations. Mediation is studied at two levels: first, we study mediatized civic resistance against deportations; and second, the role of “new” media technologies in the everyday lives of people and communities affected by deportation in Finland.
The key questions are: How is civic resistance to deportation mediatized and how does mediatized activism shape communities? How do mediated relationships across distances shape communities after deportation?
