Summary

Our study develops prototypes of a unified subscription service (i.e., platform) for the Finnish online newspaper industry. This unified subscription service will aggregate a pool of online newspapers to simplify the onboarding process for new paying subscribers. Such kind of subscription service would share similar traits with services such as Netflix or Spotify (i.e., movies, music), where content owners get compensated based on usage or time. A unified subscription service in the form of a platform and strategic alliance in the online newspaper industry would create new opportunities. in order to accomplish this, we will 1) identify technical and strategic requirements for an interorganizational platform and its stakeholders, 2) develop prototypes (i.e., subscription service platform) and evaluate their effectiveness, and 3) create knowledge about design principles for such unified subscription service and business models that support this. The project first develops joint requirements specifications for the unified subscription service together with the media industry experts. This is followed by software prototype development. The prototypes will be tested with a sample ca. 200 Finnish consumers. The purpose of the prototype testing is to understand impact of the unified subscription service to the media consumption patterns and volume of the study participants.
