Tiivistelmä
In Philosophy as a Communal Project, I will re-evaluate Plato’s conception of the role of philosophy in the lives of individual human beings. I will demonstrate that Plato conceived of philosophy as a practice and way of life that must be developed through engagement with others, particularly in dialogue, as indeed he exemplified in his writings. In his view, philosophy achieves its goals only in direct and (often intense) intersubjective engagement. I will produce a monograph that outlines the new way of reading a Platonic dialogue and applies it to Phaedrus. The book’s analysis will elucidate the dialogue’s deeper philosophical meaning as it pertains to Plato’s conception of philosophy. The book will be supplemented by at least three scholarly articles that dive deeper into particular issues that are central to the book’s analysis.
