Summary

This research project looks at where and how ‘race’ is present in cities. The notion of ‘race’ is often taboo and synonyms are used instead such as ‘culture’, ‘ethnicity’, or ‘religion’. Although ‘race’ may seem absent from everyday life, it plays an important role in shaping experiences and perceptions of others. This project focuses on ‘racial landscapes’, that is, the way ‘race’ materializes in everyday urban surroundings. This project focuses on Helsinki (Finland), Rotterdam (the Netherlands) and Bordeaux (France) because of the different insights they can bring into experiences of race and racism. Data will consist of photographs, datawalks and interviews. Locals women of color from each city will take photographs of the urban landscapes they perceive to convey racial meanings, and discuss these photographs during individual interviews. The findings are important to promote equality and non-discrimination in cities.
