Tiivistelmä
It is well known that resistance training (RT) increases skeletal muscle size and strength while muscle disuse causes muscle loss. However, muscular adaptations in muscle mass and strength once achieved with RT may be obtained faster with subsequent RT period (retraining) if the initial adaptations were lost due to disuse. Such ability for skeletal muscle to re-attain prior adaptations faster than initially is termed muscle memory. The mechanisms behind muscle memory have not been fully established. The aim of the PhD thesis is to study the molecular and cellular adaptations in skeletal muscle to 10 week RT, 10 week detraining, and 10 week retraining. To determine the magnitude of muscle memory on strength and hypertrophy, the RT with RT break is compared to 20 weeks of continuous RT.
