Tiivistelmä

Inverse modelling and imaging are essential for visualizing objects and extracting hidden information from limited and indirect measurements. For example, medical X-ray tomography reveals the 3D structure of a patient from 2D projection images. In environmental monitoring, atmospheric composition, like air pollution and greenhouse gases, are deduced from absorbed and scattered solar light measured by the satellites. In seismic imaging, the travel times of earthquakes are used to see structures in the core of the Earth. The solutions of these three problems use very similar mathematical inversion methods. The Centre of Excellence (CoE) studies high-impact open problems in a number of interconnected research areas. The development of mathematical imaging methods and new measurement techniques are closely tied together. Therefore, interdisciplinary collaboration is crucial. The methodological and theoretical focus areas are nonlinear partial differential equations, geometry, and uncertainty quantification. Advances in these have several applications in the fields of advanced tomography and inverse problems in geophysics and atmospheric sciences. These include weather and climate prediction, the exploration of water reservoirs, forests, and mineral resources (also in space), as well as medical and seismic imaging. In a feedback cycle, the novel techniques and innovations also open new avenues for pure mathematical research. The results are actively disseminated to the general public, industry, and decision makers. The CoE has been able to bridge the gap between theory and practice in several areas of mathematics and application. During its first four years, the CoE has strongly reformed with young professors who will be new principal investigators. The CoE is a unit consisting of applied mathematicians and mathematically oriented scientists with a history of active collaboration. The research portfolios of principal investigators cover the full path from theory to applications and commercialization. All research teams of the CoE focus on the strategic research areas of the host universities and in 2018-2022, the host universities have hired 7 new professors in the field of the Centre. The diverse and young personnel of the CoE with their extensive international collaboration networks ensures the continuing status of the CoE as the leading international unit in inversion methods and enables innovation of completely new imaging modalities.
