Tiivistelmä

This project addresses the seismic stability and fluid flow properties of the bedrock. These are the two most important geological features for the long-term safety of the nuclear waste facilities, but also for the siting of nuclear installations. Within crystalline rocks characteristic for old geological terranes, including the selected site of nuclear waste facility in Finland, the primary control over stability and fluid flow properties of the bedrock is provided by the networks of mechanical discontinuities. For this reason, this project focusses on investigating and modelling the 3D-architecture and properties of faults and fault-associated fractures which are the most important bedrock discontinuities. This project uses the datasets, tools and experiences gained within KARIKKO and MIRA-3D projects, which were conducted under the previous nuclear waste management safety programme (KYT), and further develops the methods and national expertise relevant to the Finnish use of nuclear energy. The main outcome of the project comprises new openly available and usable data, tools and workflows which will i) have direct applicability to the end-users, ii) lead to an overall reduction of the uncertainty of the geological models, and, ultimately, iii) improve the nuclear safety within the long-term.
