Summary

The aim of this project is to promote and support the development of the Jyväskylä Region and our society through research, development, and innovation solutions. RDI activities in sports are carried out in Finland by, among the others, the Finnish Institute of High Performance Sport KIHU, the Faculty of Sport and Health Sciences of the University of Jyväskylä (JYU), Olympic Training Centers, national training centres, sports medicine centers and various universities, companies and sports federations, but the activities are currently largely fragmented. In order to avoid overlaps and to better utilise resources to strengthen international competitiveness, it is necessary to form a national RDI network in sport to coordinate activities and promote cooperation between the different actors. The objectives of this project are: 1) to identify the current status, actors and resources of RDI activities in sport in Finland, 2) to create a membership-based RDI network in sport and cooperation models between different actors, 3) to increase the visibility of RDI activities in sport and the accessibility of experts, 4) to improve the transfer of knowledge and solutions created in RDI activities to the use of companies and society, 5) to increase cooperation between RDI and business actors, and 6) to strengthen Jyväskylä's status as the Capital of Sports in Finland.

The project is being implemented by KIHU and JYU's Faculty of Sport and Health Sciences, with KIHU acting as the lead applicant and JYU as the sub-implementer. The project involves cooperation with the Finnish Olympic Committee, Helsinki and Vuokatti-Ruka Olympic Training Centers and Varala National Training Center. The duration of the project is two years (June 1, 2023-May 31, 2025). The main outputs of the project are a report on the current sports RDI activities, the national sports RDI network coordinated by KIHU, commonly agreed operating models and communication solutions between different stakeholder, and a stronger connection between sports-related business and non- profit RDI operators. The project focuses on sports, but can also be extended to include the physical activity and health sectors, where the operating models are similar to sport, so that, the know-how gathered in this project can be used in the future.
