Tiivistelmä

Coinage metal clusters, as an ideal model for correlating macroscopic properties and microstructure of matter, is of great significance for the understanding of the rules of matter transformation. The intense studies in the past decade have been demonstrating the scientific importance and the potential applications, such as photoluminescence due to the unique molecular-like electronic structures with prominent quantum-confined effects. Ligand protection strategy has been proven to be successful in stabilizing such ultra-small metal clusters, based on which the atomic precision structures have been obtained for many cases. However, because of the intrinsic high symmetry and structural defects, the structural characterization becomes difficult, thus limiting to a large extent the deeper understanding of the structure-photoluminescence relationship. This project aims to introduce halogen bonding to shell layers of the relative stable coinage metal clusters, investigate the structural features of the new type metal clusters as well as the influence of the halogen bonding to the photoluminescence of the clusters.
