Summary

Quantum computing exploits the laws of quantum mechanics in computing and enables exponential performance gains in many application areas, dramatically changing the computation time and providing significantly more accurate results than today. The recent rapid growth of quantum technology means that many encryption algorithms that are considered secure today will soon be inadequate. The rapidly increasing power of quantum computers makes arithmetic asymmetric key exchanges unreliable. If data needs to be protected for five, ten or even more years, a quantum-safe solution is needed. If quantum-safe solutions are not implemented in time, the worst case scenario could result in, for example, the hijacking of critical infrastructure. All secret keys and private asymmetric keys protected by current public key algorithms and the data they protect are exposed to this threat.

The objectives of the project are:
1. specific requirements for quantum secure infrastructures have been identified and related threat scenarios have been developed.
2. investigated the feasibility of quantum-safe encryption solutions from the perspective of critical infrastructure services.
3. A development project to develop and pilot quantum-safe encryption solutions has been designed and the necessary consortium has been engaged.
