Summary

In this post doctoral project I study music discussions of the early Soviet Union, focusing on the multifaceted and politically charged concepts such as democracy, freedom, revolution, the people, Europe and Russia. The study opens a new perspective on Soviet and Russian history by analyzing the turbulent period from the year 1917 until the 1930s, when the composers, musicians and musicologists had to negotiate anew their role in the new political situation. Political concepts had a central role, when the new understanding of revolution in music was formulated, and also when different music traditions and their suitability for the revolutionary society were discussed. The study has also wider relevance as it gives another perspective to history of concepts, which are relevant also in today's political discussions in Russia and in Europe.
