Summary
There are a bunch of opinions about the impact of physical spaces on learning and wellbeing but they are very rarely based on the research. Impact of Learning Environment Design on teaching, learning, and wellbeing – a Nordic perspective (“LED Nordic”) project aims to explore, share and co-create content- and method-related knowledge on the impacts of learning environment design (LED) as well as to pilot some research instruments to evaluate their functionality and collect data across Nordic countries. All Nordic countries are represented in the project exploring broadly LEDs from early childhood to higher education. From the perspective of educational and architectural researchers, the aim is to facilitate multidisciplinary Nordic research collaboration in the development of research methods (how) and understanding (what) on the LED impacts. Participant education providers (municipalities and educational institutions) as well as both pedagogical and architectural designers and consultants, in turn, aim at employing the research-based knowledge on the LED impacts in the design and use of these environments. They also provide important feedback on the practical value and usefulness of research-based knowledge and methods in their daily work. As a concrete outcome, LED Nordic will openly publish a summary of the state-of-the-art LED research findings and methods in Nordic countries. Pilot studies are expected to lead to scientific publications. Findings will also result to identifying the future research needs.
