Summary

Aim of the research project is to explore meaningfulness in industrial work for the purpose of designing new meaningful job tasks – this taking place by the utilization of so-called metaverse technologies, which involves cyber-physical connectivity and connections through virtual and augmented realities as enhanced by and for the utilization of artificial intelligence. New user-centered design capabilities – drawing from a long line of research on industrial usability and UX and human cognition – are needed along with new understanding on implementation of this technology to the industrial context. The study methods involve both contextual inquiries on the field, collaborative design activities as well as development, orchestration, and evaluation of technical proofs of concepts. While new knowledge and new product design concepts are the main short-term impacts of this study, in the long term we see that our study supports industrial renewal that is necessary for reducing industries’ environmental burden and for increasing the level of employment. In creating new meaningful industrial tasks, employee well-being will be enhanced as well. The project also studies new business models that aim to draw from the technological progress promoted and studied in the project. Recognized models support the long-term positive impacts of the study.
