Summary

The overarching purpose of the current project is to provide novel insights into the heterogeneity in developmental pathways of learning early mathematical skills which are crucial for establishing a robust base for mathematical learning at school. Our focus encompasses elucidating the pathways that may contribute to mathematical difficulties, as well as identifying protective factors that promote desirable learning outcomes despite the existence of early risk factors, such as the low numerical skills in toddlerhood. We aim at getting more detailed understanding of how current instructions and practices in early childhood education and care align to address the large heterogeneity between individuals in early mathematical skills and how aware preschool teachers are of the developmental hierarchy among early math skills. We aim to create an ecologically valid prevention program through research-based enhancements of current educational practices, ensuring improved responsiveness irrespective of children's developmental phase in early math skills. Finally, we will future develop and provide empirical evidence of the efficacy of more intensive and individualized support for those kindergarten-age children who have insufficient response to this enriched group-level educational practices and show low performance in those numerical skills that are known to predict learning mathematical skills in the school.
