Summary
The global subsea infrastructure network is a vital critical infrastructure for EU member states. One of the main security challenges in the maritime area is securing critical submarine cables, including data cables, gas pipes, and power lines.
According to the European Parliament (EP) report from 2022, these cables are often forgotten and have received limited attention from policymakers, since they are hidden underground, but due to the current geopolitical situation with increased Russian naval activity and the start of the Ukraine war, this vulnerability of the maritime infrastructures has now started to get growing public and policy attention. However, the report still shows that the European governance of maritime cable protection and resilience still lags and needs improvement.
JYU task is Task 2.3 Feasibility study of cyber and hybrid attacks on subsea cables.
