Tiivistelmä

Physical activity and sports have well documented positive impacts on brain health and well-being. However, contact sports involve actions - such as collisions in ice hockey and headers in football - that can pose risk to brain health. These contact sports expose individuals to risk for concussion, but also repetitive sub-concussive events. Sport-related concussions (SRC) are known to have negative short-term effects on cognitive processes. However, long-term effects of concussion and repetitive exposure to head impacts remain unclear. Our main aim is to promote a sustainable sports career for athletes. Sports career encompasses the youth phase through the professional/elite phase to the phase after the elite career. Our first objective is to resolve which factors are associated with the safe or injured pathways in a player's career. Our second objective is to track concussive and subconcussive head impacts; their context and prevalence. We want to find out when, where, how and to whom the concussive or subconcussive head impacts happen by creating a “head impact framework”. Third objective is to explore the short-term effects of subconcussive impacts on brain health and player career. Fourth objective is to study the short- and long-term effects of concussion on brain health and player career. Fifth objective is to examine on what basis concussed players have ended their sports career.
