Summary
The CREA+BIRD project proposes an innovative approach to sustainability education, addressing the critical need for transformative pedagogical methods. Traditional education, based on knowledge transmission, often falls short. Unlike conventional models that rely solely on factual knowledge, this project emphasizes a comprehensive approach that combines scientific insights with emotional resonance. By harnessing the power of artistic expression, CREA+BIRD represents a novel integration of arts-based methodologies with scientific knowledge, leveraging the European sustainability competence framework GreenComp as a foundation.
Central to our methodology is the use of birds as messengers, offering profound insights into ecosystem dynamics and fostering a deeper connection to nature. Through innovative synthesis of citizen science data and artistic expression, the project aims to create tools for sustainability education, nurturing a systemic understanding of human-nature interdependence. Collaboration with experienced educators and environmental organizations across Europe ensures the dissemination of innovative pedagogical practices, bridging formal and non-formal education realms.
The project unites experienced teacher educators and environmental organizations from four countries with expertise in bird research. The national associations selected for this project are also networked in many ways with schools and teachers in their respective countries, and also provide in-service training for teachers. Thus, the project also provides important input for pre-service teacher education through the experiences and challenges faced by teachers at work.
Methodologically, this project follows the principles of action research, based on the initiatives of teachers in schools in search of innovative teaching methods. The project will seek innovation by bringing together schools and NGOs studying bird life by applying citizen science.
