Tiivistelmä

The Digitala project (2019-2023) funded by the Academy of Finland brought together experts in pedagogy, technology and phonetics from the University of Helsinki, Aalto University and the University of Jyväskylä. The project developed a digital aid for the assessment of speaking to facilitate the work of human assessors in large and important language tests. It also allows students to practice pronouncing and producing speech in a foreign or another language. The prototype of the aid was made in Swedish and Finnish.

The goal of the Proof of Concept project (2025-2026), which continues the DigiTala project, is to develop a mobile application from the evaluation tool that serves the integration training and the language test organized at the end of it. The PoC project evaluates Finnish as a second language and the target group is adult students. Speech samples are collected from them, which are evaluated by evaluators familiar with European proficiency levels, and with these the evaluation tool is calibrated for this target group. At the same time, the performance is enhanced and the speaking tasks and evaluation criteria are developed to be suitable for the immigrants. Use experiences of the prototype are collected from teachers and students, and the evaluations of the machine are equated with the students' learning results, which are measured during or at the end of the integration training. The project involves cooperation with e.g. With the Board of Education and some companies.
