Summary

The main objective of this work is to study architectural tourism in architect Alvar Aalto’s (1898-1976) buildings. The
focus is on visitor motives, expectations and experiences. The buildings selected for this research are the Aalto
House, the studio and the summer house. All those three buildings have become museums after the death of the
architect. The subject is approached by studying the change of the function of the buildings, their authenticity and
originality, and the marketing of the museums. The results help us to see the house museums on a wider
international scale and to know how the authenticity and originality are passed on to customers. When the motives
and needs of visitors are known marketing and services can be developed and targeted in a more effective way. The
results can be applied to other Aalto sites as well as to other modern house museums around the world. Public
interest towards the buildings also has a positive impact on their protection.
