Summary
TRAILS is an internationally unique effort to utilize longitudinal data in analyzing the antecedents and mechanisms of mental well-being at the onset of late adulthood, specifically at age 60. It will focus on the links of retirement or its anticipation, grandparenthood, health concerns, and leisure activities to well-being, as well as examining how these links are affected by personality, developmental background, and societal demands. New data, at age 60, will be collected from the JYLS participants, who have already been followed from age 8 (N = 369) to 50 at various stages in life. It will yield insights into how the individual brings his or her personality and earlier life experiences into how this transitional phase of life is negotiated. The project will educate experts in the fields of psychology and gerontology, and will be conducted at the Gerontology Research Center and Faculty of Sport and Health Sciences, University of Jyväskylä, together with international partners.
