Summary
Ihmisen aiheuttamat muutokset maapallon ekosysteemeissä ovat usein vahingollisia eläinten terveydelle. Nämä terveysvaikutukset voivat johtua suoraan ympäristöön päässeistä myrkyistä, tai epäsuoraan ekosysteemin toiminnan muutoksista, kuten ravinnon tai lajien välisten suhteiden muutoksista. Tutkimme suorien ja epäsuorien mekanismien vaikutusta Tsernobylissä Ukrainassa, missä radioaktiivinen säteily vaikuttaa suoraan eläinten terveyteen, mutta voi myös epäsuorasti vaikuttaa eläinten ympäristöön ja edelleen niiden ravinnon määrään ja laatuun. Alustavien tulosten mukaan eläinten fysiologia esim. metabolianopeus ja ruuansulatus muuttuvat säteilyn seurauksena. Laajojen kenttäkokeiden avulla testaamme ovatko nämä muutokset pelkästään vahingollisia eläimille vai ovatko muutokset sopeumia säteily-ympäristöön.
