Summary
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is one of the most revolutionary general-purpose technologies currently changing our world. The range of potential direct applications, related complementary innovations and wider societal impacts are yet uncharted (Brynjolfsson & Mcafee 2017). In this research project, we approach the challenge by focusing on first, how to make Finland a global leader in designing and applying AI in responsible and ethical way, and second, how to make ethical AI a competitive advantage for companies and for the whole society? The project aims at harnessing the advances of AI to facilitate sustainable societal growth by integrating ethical principles in the design of technology, organizations, business, and policy development, essentially focusing on preventing harm and maximizing the benefits, and improving conditions of action and cooperation. Finland has an opportunity to set itself at the forefront of the international competition by embracing human-centered and ethical design thinking, and thus influencing regulations in the field.
