Summary

Health literacy means the ability to access, understand, appraise and apply health information in order to make decisions concerning health care, disease prevention and health promotion during life course. Previous studies indicate that low health literacy is associated with poorer health outcomes among older adults. However, knowledge about the association of health literacy and health behaviors and functioning in old age is scarce, and information about older persons’ health literacy is currently lacking in Finland. This study will address health literacy and examine the associations of health literacy, health behavior and functioning among older Finnish persons.
