Summary

We propose to combine nanoscience and neuroscience for developing flexible and biocompatible brain-machine interface for future neuroprosthetics. This will solve a major problem in the current technology that is based on hard and bulky materials, which are not compatible with soft tissue. The goal will be achieved by joining forces of two leading Finnish centers with complementary expertise - Nanoscience Center (NSC) in Jyväskylä and BioMediTech in Tampere. The expertise of the groups in graphene research and neuroscience allows us to take a strong international role in the emerging field of graphene bioelectronics and make new openings in the development of future neuroprosthetics. Via this initiative, Finland has an excellent opportunity to become a significant international player in this field. In addition to the great long-term prospects for improving human lives, this project also develops novel technology that will lead to creation of new industry.
