Summary

This Academy Research Fellow project investigates organizational hybridity in civil society organizations. In a situation where the economic and political organizational environment of civil society organizations in Sub-Saharan Africa is under continuous change, and the new global sustainable development agenda channels attention to multisectoral cooperation, the organizational forms and logics are under continuous flux and negotiation. Organizations draw from different logics available in their societal environments, as well as struggle between different demands from organizational environments. This research project investigates the organizational dynamics through a notion of hybridity. It draws from the rapidbly emerging literatures of hybrid organizations, hybrid governance, and cultural hybrids. With the method of organizational ethnography the research analyses enactment of different logics, emerge of cultural hybrids, and power struggles and clashes between different logicst at the level of organizational practices in Tanzanian and Ugandan NGOs. Research produces both new knowledege on the dynamics of civil society and applies institutional logics approach in novel societal contexts.
