Summary
My article dissertation analyzes the position of psychiatric diagnoses in contemporary Finnish media. Diagnoses are medical pronouncements that have come to play a crucial role in not only as means of self-understanding but also in the modern concept of human being. Furthermore, my study draws on literary studies and the multidisciplinary fields of madness studies, particularly on Cultural Studies on Mental Health and Illness. In the study I use Svend Brinkmann's theory of diagnostic culture. Previous research examining mental health issues and madness in Finnish media is close to non-existent.
