Azaazulenes are yet poorly studied bicyclic nitrogen-containing heteroaromatic chemical compounds, which possess promising physicochemical properties for various applications from materials chemistry to drug discovery. The major limitation for exploring azaazulenes is the lack of efficient synthetic routes for their versatile synthesis and the knowledge of their stability. This study focuses on investigating the synthesis, as well as the reactivity and stability, in a systematic manner. We aim at finding answers to the currently open questions regarding the accessibility and usefulness of azaazulenes. The results from this research will create the basis for studying the potential of azaazulenes in various chemical applications, such as catalysts in chemical reactions.
