Summary

Menopause with hormonal transition is significant life-event, which may have dramatic effects on women's health thereafter. This project determines the specific regulatory functions of systemic and intramuscular estradiol in microRNA-mediated regulation of tissue interactions as contributing factors to the risk of metabolic dysfunction in aging women. Study utilizes animal and cell models as well as longitudinal study on middle-aged women with new 4-year follow-up. The collected biospecimens will be analyzed with methods of genome-wide molecular biology (e.g., NGS) and data integrated to the repeated measures of sex steroid hormones, traditional and new metabolic disorder risk factors, and physical activity (self-reported & objective accelerometer measures). The holistic approach of this study will produce urgently needed knowledge of menopausal transition as a process that affects entire female body and health.
