Summary

Due to the global demand for nitrogenous fertilizers, the recovery, as well as removal of nitrogen is the need of present time. On the other hand, phosphorus, a non-renewable resource, faces a serious risk of depletion. Therefore, recovery and reuse of nitrogen and phosphorus are highly desirable especially focusing the waste stream as a valuable source. The EXPO-STV project will estimate the potential of nitrogen recovery from nitrate-rich explosive industry wastewater as a valuable fertilizer struvite by using phosphates recovered from the bone waste. An economical approach for the development of low-cost material for sustainable treatment of nitro compounds of wastewater and the recovery of N via struvite precipitation from explosive industry wastewater could solve the problem of excess nitrate concentration in wastewater with the additional benefit of low-cost struvite fertilizer for the agriculture industry.
