Summary

The four-year Academy project "Incidences on fractals" studies the geometric properties of fractal sets in Euclidean spaces. One of the main research questions is the following: if one wants to find out the size of a fractal in 3-dimensional space by taking pictures of it, then how many pictures are needed for reliable answers, and from which angles should they be taken for best results? Besides their inherent interest and potential applications, such questions often turn out to have close connections to other fields of mathematics, such as harmonic analysis and additive combinatorics. The project will employ a team of three mathematicians to study the research problems. One aim of the project is also to increase international collaboration in the field, and e.g. to host a conference in fractal geometry during the funding period.
