Summary

We organize a series of three workshops in Stockholm, Jyväskylä and Trondheim during years 2021-2022. The workshops will bring together a network of Nordic sign language (SL) researchers who all work with multimodal SL corpora from a cognitive-functional linguistic perspective. The workshops have two specific scientific objectives. First, they will develop novel, empirical corpus methods for SLs. Such methods will contribute to the further refinement of our understanding of particular SLs as well as our theories of human language more generally. Second, the workshops will contribute to the planning of a corpus-exploiting research project that will focus on the similarities and differences of three Nordic SLs: Swedish, Finnish and Norwegian SL. The planned workshop series meets several criteria of Nordic added value outlined by NordForsk. More generally, the workshops will increase the chances of success for all participating researchers in their national and EU related research activities and other international research cooperation.
