Summary

Re-collecting the Cold War - CWC2020
A Commemorative Conference 30 Years after the Fall of the Iron Curtain, Jyväskylä 2020

2019-2021 marks the thirtieth anniversary of the end of the Cold War. To commemorate this important anniversary, the University of Jyväskylä through the Institute of Art, Music and Culture Studies will hold a major international conference, revisiting this seminal development, and its significance in Europe and other continents. The conference will be held over the course of three days (14-16 October 2020) at the University of Jyväskylä.
From 2019 to 2021, the thirtieth anniversary of the collapse of the iron curtain and the end of the Cold War has been, and will be, commemorated around the world (this conflict between the two superpowers: the USA and the USSR involved virtually the entire globe: Africa, Asia, the Americas and Australasia). It is noteworthy that this long conflict found several symbolic endings – the end of Communism in Poland in 1989, the reunification of Germany in 1990 and, finally, the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991). The projected conference at the University of Jyväskylä will be a part of commemorative and analytical scholarly activities undertaken worldwide, and it will look at the Cold War from an international perspective. The cultural factor, hitherto largely ignored, will be given due recollection and reconsideration. The round anniversary of the end of the Cold War in 2019-2021 provides a perfect opportunity to re-call the causes and the many direct and indirect consequences of this conflict.
For the University of Jyväskylä and its Department of Art Music and Culture Studies, the conference will also provide the opportunity for fully discussing the existing possibilities of co-operation with representatives of particular potential institutional partners as well as foreign institutions represented during the conference by participating scholars.

Objectives of the conference:
To recall and broaden the knowledge of the Cold War perceived from the perspectives of various branches of the humanities (culture, history, political science, sociology, etc.) and in different geopolitcal contexts (Europe, Asia, America etc.).
To update the historiography on a variety of aspects of the Cold War according to the latest research of conference participants.
To bridge some of the gaps in the historiography and to suggest some areas for further research.
To initiate and engage in dialogues between various branches of the humanities and social sciences from national and supranational perspectives.

Anticipated Outcomes:

Collaboration and networking between institutions represented by scholars taking part in the conference.
Internationalization of University of Jyväskylä.
Strengthening the Department of Art, Music and Culture Studies, University of Jyväskylä as a center disseminating knowledge about various aspects of the Cold War.
