Summary

Global exercise recommendations are the same for both sexes despite significant physiological differences between women and men. Inthe NaisQs study we will compare “traditional” endurance training with programs in which training is periodized based on the hormonalfluctuation of the menstrual cycle (increased training volume in either the follicular phase (FP) or luteal phase (LP)). Training willinclude 8 weeks of moderate intensity endurance training (MIET) and 8 weeks of high-intensity interval training (HIIT). We aim toelucidate whether or not “period periodized training” can be more effective than traditional training due to the tendency for greater fatoxidation related to higher levels of estrogen (estradiol) present in the LP. This 16-week training study will evaluate changes incardiometabolic health, body composition, endurance performance, PMS-symptoms, body satisfaction, and health-related quality oflife. The study will be carried out at the University of Jyväskylä.
