Tiivistelmä

The pursuit towards higher spectral efficiency in wireless communication has been around for about four decades. In addition to high throughput, 5G and Beyond (5GB) will be able to support different types of services, including ultra-reliable and low latency communications (URLLC). This refers to systems with stringent requirements on availability, latency and reliability and is a key notion for ultra-reliable machine-type communications such as Vehicle-to-X (V2X) communications and industrial control applications. In contrast to conventional wireless communications systems that heavily depend on large data packets through the use of coding and information theory, URLLC are based on short packets. In this case, errors cannot be reduced to an arbitrarily low level for a given coding rate due to the limited packet size; this opens a new research direction for the re-examination of conventional communication networks, which were mainly designed based on the Shannon formula and thus cannot be directly applied to short-packet communications.
Tomsk Polytechnic University (TPU) and University of Jyväskylä (JYU) has a recognized theoretical work on the domain of wireless communication theory and 5G communications systems and its expertise perfectly matches with the theoretical aspects of the proposal. The UMA5GB project aims to bring together experts with complementary background in wireless communication systems in order to provide a study on URLLC. The general objective of this research proposal is threefold.
1. To study the fundamental limits of URLLC and design efficient protocols that ensure optimal trade-offs between throughput and latency under the finite block length regime.
2. To investigate the effect of URLLC on wireless powered communications and characterize the fundamental trade-off between harvested energy and throughput over short packet communications.
3. To setup an established collaboration between the JYU and TPU, in the area of wireless communications. During this project, the partners from the two countries will utilize their own knowledge, experiences and infrastructure in the specific area to achieve the proposed innovative results.
4. Develop joint PhD co-supervision project between both universities in the area of ICT.
5. UMA5GB project studies URLLC a promising solution for machine-type wireless networks with several new applications and services, and brings JYU’s research reputation in telecommunication from its inheritance.
