Summary

The project sets out to develop an interactive language game for primary school children, focusing at first on the Swedish language and lower secondary school students. The game aims to develop language awareness and inspire students to study different languages and reflect on their own learning. The national core curriculum of basic education (2014) includes seven areas of transversal competence, of which the most essential to the project are: thinking and learning-to-learn skills (L1), multiliteracy (L4) and information and communication technologies (L5). Games and gameplay are mentioned as a learning approach. Games that utilize foreign languages allow students to experience meaningful authentic language and learning situations, as well as to explore different cultures and languages. The game focuses on Swedish language and is based on a set of skill-based tasks that students can do on their own or with their friends and at their own pace. The game’s tasks are based on the current national core curriculum of basic education. The game will help develop not only the students’ language skills but also their language awareness. The game also aims to support the learners’ roles as active agents of their own learning and thus their lifelong learning skills.
