Summary

The aim of the project is to develop a PE teacher-delivered theory-based intervention to promote school students’ motivation toward PA in and out-of-school contexts. The intervention will be guided by the trans-contextual model developed to explain the processes by which PE teachers’ support for motivation in the classroom promotes children’s motivation to engage in PA outside of school. The intervention will adopt a cluster-randomized wait-list-control design with randomization by school and teacher. 24Twenty-four PE teachers from 12 schools will apply the intervention program to 476 students in PE classes. Baseline and follow-up measures at 4, 9 and 14 week will be collected from students and teachers. PE teachers will receive 12-hour training on strategies to support autonomous PA behavior. The research will make a contribution to the literature by demonstrating effects of an in-school physical activity intervention on out-of-school participation in physical activity
