Summary

The objective of this UNI-ICI project is to strengthen the teaching and research capacity of two Mozambican universities, Eduardo Mondlane University (EMU) and University of Zambeze (UniZambeze). It has two main goals: (i) Support the PhD programme in forestry, which starts at UEM in 2017, in the areas of environmental and socio-economic studies, and (ii) strengthen the general teaching and research capacity of both EMU and UniZambeze in these areas. Key activities include two summer schools at Jyväskylä (2017 and 2018), and two course- and fieldwork periods in Mozambique (2018 and 2019), and web courses and individual orientation in minor research project in-between these. In addition there will be research exchange to Finland (4 doctoral students to Jyväskylä and Joensuu), and some equipment will be purchased. Participants from JYU include Pekka Virtanen (Coordinator) and Pertti Jokivuori from YFI, and Prof Markku Kuitunen, Elisa Vallius and Anssi Lemsu from the Department of Environmental Sciences. The other partner from Finland is the University of Eastern Finland (Irmeli Mustalahti).
