Lakes can receive large inputs of terrestrial organic matter from their surrounding catchments, and this has been to proposed to act a cross-ecosystem subsidy to lake food webs (consumer allochthony). However, this proposal remains highly controversial, as some researchers maintain that the terrestrial detritus entering lakes is a poor quality resource of little value to consumer organisms in lakes. This project will use stable isotope analysis, and especially the relatively novel application of hydrogen isotope analysis, to trace the passage of terrestrial organic matter into lake consumers and quantify their dependence on this external organic matter source. Data will be collected from a wide range of lake types within Finland to analyse what determines the magnitude of consumer allochthony in different lakes. Through collaboration with leading international groups this analysis will be extended to a wider geographical range of lakes.
